- Human Rights Day, or Manavadhikar Diwas, is celebrated every year on 10 December.
- This day was chosen because on 10 December 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)”.
- Human Rights Day was celebrated for the first time in 1950.The theme for the year 2025 is – “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials”.
UDHR — What is the Universal Declaration of Human Rights?
- UDHR is an important document that describes 30 fundamental rights and freedoms.
- It states that every human being—regardless of caste, religion, race, gender, language, nationality, social or economic status—has the right to life, liberty, equality, and freedom.
- UDHR established a “common standard” that is considered ideal for nations and their laws across the world.
- Because of this, many countries have created constitutions, laws, and international agreements—such as civil, political, social, and economic rights—based on it.
Relevance of Human Rights Day in 2025
- In 2024–25, the world has seen many changes and challenges—such as social inequalities, discrimination based on caste, religion, gender, poverty, unequal access to education and healthcare, etc. Amid all this, UDHR reminds us that every human being must get respect, equality, and opportunities.
- Human Rights Day gives us a chance to reflect on whether we, as a society, government, or individuals, are respecting the rights and values declared in 1948.
- Looking at 2025, human rights are not just ideals but real needs for equality, justice, and fairness. We must ensure that every individual, regardless of language, religion, caste, or economic condition, lives a life of dignity, safety, equality, and equal opportunities.
